Letting My Inner Nerd Shine

As soon as I found out I was pregnant, I knew that I didn’t really want to receive pre-natal care from the obgyn’s office that I had been to previously. They just really weren’t ever able or willing to provide me with what I always really want – information! Appointments are too quick, doctors are too unconcerned and everything about the environment is generally sterile and sort of lifeless. That’s the opposite of what I want! I’ve got a brand new life growing inside of me right now. Somebody get excited and let’s talk about some details! ….oh…no? Just a quick 5 minute visit to weigh me and charge me $60? No thanks.

So, your Dad and I found this neat place called The Birth Center. Its a midwife practice and it is perfect. I was sold from the moment I read in their literature that I should expect the first pre-natal visit to last at least an hour due to all of the education that needs to take place for a new mom. Yes! Sign me up! After we went for an orientation, even your Dad was convinced.

So this past week I had my first appointment and they are no joke. I was there for an hour and half. I learned how to take all my own stats (so fun!), I got to ask all of my questions, I had lovely education conversation with one of the nurse-widwives and I left with a binder full of homework and extra resources to read through. Who would have thought that a binder full of things to learn would really get me this excited!?!

We Got a Peek At You!

Also, they had me get an ultrasound done to determine exactly how far along I am in the pregnancy and to project a due date. Found out that we should be expecting you around August 27th! Also found out that you look like a tiny, adorable peanut and that you can already move your little nub legs all by yourself. Great job!

I’m so happy for you! Natural childbirth is an awesome experience, and learning all about it is empowering, so I’m thrilled you’ve found such a great birth center. The closest I could get to that around here was an excellent doula. I found out that hospitals (that is, ‘stress’) make my labors stall, so we always had to overcome that! It sounds like you are in the best care and will have just the right environment for a great birthing experience. I wish you, Brian and your little peanut the very best!
